About Me

Feeling inspired is more than just about having an idea to follow, it is about a core feeling in me that allows me to work and be creative.  Inspiration comes to me when I am in the present moment, without distractions, using all my senses, and this is usually when I am outside.  My mind is relaxed and ready to flow with thoughts and ideas, it is very energising.  I often use my camera which helps me focus in and really look at things, pausing and framing them in that moment. I bring that energy back into my studio.  It is a calm, peaceful place to be and it allows me to find a natural pace to work at.  I enjoy the process, and like to take my time.  It feels good to avoid all that rushing and speed that seems so highly prized in todays society. I work mainly in porcelain as it is a beautiful canvas for drawing and colour and feels lovely unglazed too.  The challenge to produce forms that are practical, beautiful and appealing to a wide audience is a fun one to meet.  Working with clay is for me not something you do in isolation.  It’s all tied up with the landscape and the beautiful natural world and goes all the way to the food that we eat and drink.  When designing I think about all these things and the choices we make and how they give us our identity.

My studio, Bluegrass Pottery, is in the beautiful fishing village of Cellardyke in the East Neuk of Fife. Please check that page for details on studio opening times, events and the possibility of adapting the studio to run classes.

After a career as a radiotherapy physicist in a busy London hospital I spent three years learning pottery skills in Singapore with artist Lin Meng Khuang. I then formalised things with a BA Design from Glasgow School of Art. Here I was fortunate to meet many talented tutors and one of those was Hungarian ceramic artist Sandor Dobany who taught me mould making skills.

A highlight for my ceramics journey was a trip to Japan in 2019, magical and so inspiring to spend time in Mashiko and to just see the Shoji Hamada studio in all its simplicity.

I have had work in galleries and shows throughout the UK over the 30 years of making. I had a studio in the west end of Glasgow, had commissions for architectural work and have taken part, with my bottle collection, in a biennale in Greece. I have run workshops for specific events and assisted with art therapy.

Now I am happy to spend time absorbing my seaside environment indulging in my enjoyment of other mediums to create art, and letting it take me back to creating some new work.

I will post on my facebook page dates when the studio is open otherwise please use the contact form for further info.
